Current Zeeman systems utilize methods based on common modifiers using instrumentation that applies a fixed nominal magnetic field. Traditionally volatility and speciation have been selected by means of the addition of these various modifiers. The reaction between the modifier and the analyte causes electrons in the bonded analyte to be placed in different orbitals which subsequently changes the spin-orbital coupling of the atoms.
Not all elements exhibit the same sensitivity at one field strength setting thus sensitivity cannot be truly optimized for each element with traditional systems.
By varying the Magnetic Field Strengths (MFS) we are able to change the spin-orbital coupling in the analyte atoms which lead to a change in the Anomalous Zeeman splitting patterns observed.
This unique ability to vary the MFS enables the user to maximize sensitivity by manipulating the responses observed for both the analyte of interest and matrix.
Additionally the signal/noise ratio can be individually optimized for the same element using different modifiers and varying the MFS.
